Teddy bear cake - picnic cake

This teddy bear marzipan cake consists in fruit cake covered with a layer of green marzipan. Teddy bear cakes and picnic cakes are most frequently used as kids birthday cakes and baby shower cakes.

This cake illustrates a scene where a family of four teddy bears are having an abundant picnic in the countryside. All the decorations on the cake are made entirely out of marzipan. The marzipan is tinted the desired color and than moulded into the selected shape.

The red and white chequered table cloth is made by rolling out a white and a red piece of marzipan. Squares are cut out from both pieces of marzipan and placed together to form the chequered pattern. At this point the marzipan is slightly rolled once more causing the red and white squares to stick together. The marzipan table cloth is now ready to be laid on the cake.

The teddy bears are all made out of the same brown marzipan, though the adult bears are slightly larger than the younger ones their design remains the same. To emphasize the different roles the teddy bears play in the family specific marzipan decorations have been added. The father bear is sitting by his hat and wears a bow round his neck, mother bear wears an apron and holds a spoon in her hand, the boy bear holds a ball and the girl bear wears a ribbon and holds some flowers.

All the picnic accessories on this cake are made out of marzipan whether they are fruits, vegetables or baskets. All the accessories do not have to necessarily be moulded exactly to scale, it is important however that all the shapes turn out in a similar scale to complement each other. If some objects are too big they are going to stand out too much, driving the attention away from the rest of the cake.
